Additional Information

Aboriginal art tells a story. The story is unique to the artist. Stories have long been told in the Aboriginal Culture through their art work as the language was oral and not a written language. Hence, when they wanted to tell a story, it was done through art.

Traditionally, paintings were done in ochre, so the colours were all natural earth colours, the colours of the ochre rocks that were crushed and added to water to form paint.

Paintings were done on bark, rocks, stones and on their tools. They painted their bodies with ochre for special celebrations.

These days, Aboriginal artists have access to paints that are used by artists everywhere so Aboriginal art has evolved in some cases into a more contemporary style since they have a choice of many different colours, opposed to the traditional earth colours.
